Let me begin by extending my condolences to the Soumare and Magassa families.
But I also must extend congratulations, neighbors. Prior to this tragedy, I think not too many in Highbridge would have predicted this community would come together the way it has. I sincerely commend each and every one of you. We all came together to take care of our brothers and sisters in their time of need.
I can humbly say that this tragedy has ignited into a blessing as we all came together for a greater good.
In last month’s issue, I explored the connections between Christians and Muslims. The way Highbridge has come together in the past two weeks is evidence of the strength of these connections, which go above and beyond our individual choices and preferences.
I am almost certain people in the neighborhood did not say to themselves: “I wonder if they loved their children like I love my children? I wonder if they hurt like I hurt?”
Instead, they embraced the families with love, support, and let’s not forget respect. People were mindful of the families’ cultural and religious beliefs, which I applaud. These are the ingredients a society needs to exist in harmony, and the world could learn a lesson from Highbridge.
This whole experience—the loss to the families and to the community, the outpouring of support , and the fortitude that the grieving fathers displayed throughout the entire ordeal— is so powerfully overwhelming, and the resolve they have to put it all in God’s hands could be seen and felt in our hearts. The world could learn a lesson, too, from these Muslim men. How strong their faith in God must be.
Community organizations, schools, community boards, elected officials, and even the Yankees came together for the good of it all. I am so proud that we have provided our children with necessary tools they could use to transform the world starting with themselves.
I encourage all of us to continue to unite for our families, our community and humanity. Let’s continue to show our children how it could be done, and teach the world a lesson.
May Almighty God continue to teach us a lesson.
