The founder and executive director of Sustainable South Bronx, a non-profit organization, was awarded one of 25 "Genius" grants from the John D. and Catherine T. MacArthur Foundation, the foundation announced Sept. 20. Majora Carter is an urban revitalization strategist and leads the organization's efforts for urban revitalization and environmental justice.
Carter, 38, will receive $500,000 over five years, "no strings attached," the foundation said in its announcement. Carter said in published reports that she had no plans to do anything differently. She helped derail the city's plans to build a waste management plant in Hunt's Point, among other things.
