Residents of 31 buildings in the Mount Eden and Highbridge neighborhoods will have low-cost access to broadband Internet service thanks to a deal between the Mount Hope Housing Company and Verizon Communications. One Economy Corporation, a national non-profit organization that utilizes technology to help low-income people, is also a partner in the project.
The 31 buildings have 1,250 apartments that are home to almost 6,000 people, according to the housing company. They will pay about $20 a month for access to a broadband Internet connection. Verizon will install the connection for free, but the tenants will have to provide their own computers.
