The New York City Housing Authority Highbridge Garden Residents Association invites the community to its 9th Annual Family Day and Health Fair, July 22 from Noon to 5 p.m. The event will be held on University Avenue between 164th and 165th streets. Seniors are invited out for the following events sponsored by the Highbridge Community Life Center: Bingo! At the Highbridge Recreation Center on July 12th. Reservations are not needed for these events. Rides to the Rec Center are available. Contact Mark at the Storefront (information below). Tuesday July 25th, is the second Goshen trip of the summer. (This trip is for those who are not able to attend the June Goshen Trip.) Our wonderful cooks from CWOP have volunteered to cook for us again and Hubert McCabe, one of the organic gardeners, has agreed to show us around and to update us on the garden. Seating is limited for this trip as well, so you must RSVP by Thursday July 13th, 2006. Computer training for Seniors will be held on Tuesday, July 11 from 10:30am till 12:00pm at 1248 Nelson Ave., (in the basement of Sacred Heart School). We will go over email, surfing the Internet and Microsoft Word along with anything else that the students are interested in. Every Thursday in July (July 6, 13, 20 and 26), hip hop pioneers and legends will perform free in Crotona Park from 6 to 9 p.m. The park is located by Indian Park Lake at Charlotte Street and Crotona Park East. Take the 2 or 5 train to 174th Street, walk south on Boston Road to Suburban Place, right on Crotona Park East, left to Charlotte. Sponsored by Tools of War in association with Friends of Crotona Park and Council Member Joel Rivera.

The New York Police Department's 2006 Bronx Harmony Day Picnic is set for July 25 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at Harris Field Park near Lehman College. Admission is free and lots of entertainment and fun is promised. Call (718) 299-4503 to RSVP before July 11 and for more information.

A free training series is available coming this fall for families with children with disabilities and professionals who work with such families. Five workshops are scheduled as part of the "What's Out There and How to Get It" series being sponsored by Resources for Children with Special Needs, Inc. The new Bronx Library Center (310 East Kingsbridge Road) has a variety of events and activities for community residents. Monday through Friday, children 3- to 8-years-old can participate in the Summer Reading Aloud. On July 6, the Center is hosting SCORE, a counseling session for small business owners at 11 a.m. On Fridays at 2 p.m., children 7- to 12-years-old can play board games on "Game Day" at the Center. On Friday, July 7, young adults, 12- to 18-years-old can compete in the Center's special gaming competition. The City Parks Foundation provides free children's tennis lessons at the Williamsbridge Oval from noon to 2 p.m. Classes run from Wednesday, July 5 through mid-August. Children ages 5 to 16, of any skill level, are welcome. For more information, call (212) 360-1399.

Plena Libre, a 13-piece musical group that plays plena music with touches of reggae, jazz and other Latin music forms, is playing a free concert at St. Mary's Park at 146th Street and St. Ann's Place on July 11. The free concert starts at 7 p.m., rain or shine.

St. Ann's Park will host a summer festival for children and families, 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. on July 18. The festival features arts, crafts, food, music, games and more.

The Bronx Independent Film Festival, featuring movies from around the world including several world premieres, will take place at the Lovinger Theatre at Lehman College on July 14 and 15. All tickets are cheap - $5. Call (718) 960-8025 or visit www.lehmanstages.org for more information.

The New York Philharmonic Concerts in the parks series comes to Van Cortlandt Park at 8 p.m. Monday, July 17. The concert will begin with a Coronation March, followed by a Violin Concerto, and Symphony No. 8. Conductor Xian Zhang and violinist Jennifer Koh are the featured artists.
