In the wake of the March 7 fire on Woodycrest Avenue that killed 10 people, journalism students in the Get and Give were asked: If you were a reporter covering the event, how would you approach the situation?
"It would be hard to get the family to answer these questions. These are some good examples of things to know about the fire: I would ask the family's friends how the family reacted. I also would ask neighbors to answer questions about the fire."- Ricardo Abreu
"If my editor called me early in the morning to do a story about a tragic fire in which 9 people died, I would go. I would interview the person and start by telling the father, "I know this is a terrible time for you and a lot of people will grieve over this, including me." Then I would say , " I was wondering if you can give me some info." Then if he said, "no," I would tell him I respect him and I understand he doesn't want to talk right now, and I'll come back later." - Depree Riley.
"If my editor called me, I would go to see what the problem is by asking the victims if they lost any one. If they do not want to answer, then I would ask different people until one answered. I would first ask who was around. When I found out, I would ask who died, and if there were any survivors. If yes, I would ask where the survivor is, then ask who died. When I am finished, I would put it in the Daily News." - Dwight Robinson
"If my boss calls me in the middle of the night telling me to do what he asks me to do, I would ask people what happened in the fire. Then I would tell my boss what happened, and then my boss will know what to do. The reporter will ask people what happened, and then he will get the boss."
- Brian Cappellan
"I would get up from my bed and get dressed and go to where it is at. I would get the information from the person in the fire. I would respect and tell them that it's alright, and while they are speaking, I'll start writing and telling them it's alright. If they don't want to speak to me, I would tell them that 'You did the right thing.'- Jeremiah Garcia
