The student council candidates spoke to their classmates before the election. Here are some of the candidates' comments.
Hello fellow students, staff and invited guests, my name is Jean Carlos Suarez. I have been attending in the after-school program for three years, and I have enjoyed every minute of it. In this program, I have learned more about leadership, morals, and respect than I expected to. Because of this, I have great morals and a sense of responsibility. A special thanks goes to the counselors of this after-school program known as the Get and Give Highbridge Community Life Center. Ladies and gentlemen, vote for me for president and I promise to bring forth the morals and responsibility like a leader. I, Jean Carlos Suarez, promise to meet the needs of this after-school program and bring forth more excitement and joy. For example, going outside. Vote for me.

My fellow students, my name is Diamond Graham and I want to be your vice president. I've been in this after-school for four years and ever since I've been here I've watched this after-school change from better to worse. But if I was your vice president I would change this after-school for the better. I would improve this after-school by making sure everyone gets help with homework when need the help. We would get better snacks and an increase in the number of outdoor activities and for me to make sure you are in a caring and livable place. So, to cut this short, vote for me as your vice president. I want you to vote for me!

Good afternoon faculty, parents and to all my fellow students. My name is Tempestt Tucker. As you already know my opponent Diamond Graham and I are both in the running to become vice president of grades 4-8 for the Highbridge After School Program. I'm confident that if I'm voted vice president I will dedicate my time and efforts, creating different ways to make improvements for our program as well as being smart and sophisticated. I am also very determined to address all the ideas, concerns and issues gathered during this election process. As vice president, I promise to always be honest and treat everyone equal. I promise to set a good example and be a strong voice for my fellow students.
I intend to propose different ways to contribute that we all can participate in to raise money, hopefully to produce more trips and to add more club activities....

Good afternoon young ladies and gentlemen. My name is Carmen Ramirez, I am 10-years-old and I'm running for president. I have been president before; so, I have experience. It was last year in third grade class. I can clearly see that here are a lot more brains, a lot more hearts and a lot more souls. I want to be president because I want to make a difference in your lives. I want to help you in whatever you need. I want you happy. I want you to make a difference in the world.... We need enforced rules. This after-school needs someone who understands your situation. And after looking at death straight in the eyes I think I can help you. I don't want you to pity me. I want you to see me and others in different ways.

I chose to run for president because I believe that with your support I can make improvements, improvements that will make you happy. Before you vote I want you to know this election is not about me, but about you and who you think will make great improvements in this after-school. I know for a fact that we all have disagreements and don't like each other sometimes and of course no one can force you like anyone. But, when we work together anything is possible. As president I will make sure that every voice is heard. Whether big or small, Spanish or African American, no matter whom you are if you need something or a shoulder to lean on you, can count on me for sure. You all are special. Highbridge would not Highbridge without you. A lot of you are in club activities such as drama, dance and drumming. But a lot of the time you aren't able to practice with the club. Even I as a member of Drama and Dance complain because we have less than a month to practice and we're still up to the first scene. So, I plan on making more time for each club because I'm sure no one wants to look unfinished on stage....
