Bronx to get 23 new schools this fall
By John Wihbey
When it comes to city schools, small is in. And no borough has received more small public schools since 2003 than the Bronx. As part of Mayor Michael R. Bloomberg's "Children First" reform initiative, which aims to open 200 small city schools by 2007, the borough will see 23 more small schools open this fall. Many are housed in buildings that already contain other schools. Most will focus on specific themes, such as sports professions, creative writing or science. With beginning enrollments of usually fewer than 200 students, small schools emphasize close student-teacher relationships and creative, project-based learning. This map depicts the locations of Bronx small schools set to open in September.
