No injuries reported in fast moving fire

Smoke and flames darkened the bright blue sky as an abandoned building on Summit Avenue caught the attention of residents.

987 Summit caught fire around 11:30 a.m. last Thursday.

“The fire moved fast,” said onlooker Bianca De la Cruze. “It first started at the bottom and the next thing you see, flames were coming out of the roof.”

The building, which is a Department of Housing Preservation and Development property, was apparently under construction. A wood framed scaffolding was erected in front as well as a dumpster near by.

Surprised by how quickly the fire moved, residents who live on the block were not surprised that the fire actually happened.

Referring to the abundance of garbage strewn throughout the building’s basement, Norma Rosa said, “All they do is throw their garbage down there. They probably threw a lit cigarette and look what happened.”

There were no reported injuries and no damage to any of the buildings connected to the property. The exact cause of the fire has not been determined.
