Happy Birthday Horizon!

By Denáe Brewer
Editor-in-chief

On this date in 1998, the first edition of the Highbridge Horizon hit the streets. Our front cover showcased the efforts of a local parent group determined to get a speed hump installed in front of C.E.S. 73. They achieved their goal and months later, the Horizon featured work crews pouring the asphalt for the humps.

That is what the Horizon is about. We bring the issues that matter most to you to the forefront. Dubbed “The Voice of Southern Highbridge,” the Horizon has effected community empowerment and change—from getting various potholes filled to reporting on delinquent landlords.

This edition is a tribute to all of the hard work our staff has put in through the years. Inside, you will find several stories that have graced our pages. In 2003 we will look back at our past articles and provide updates.

As we kick off the fifth year, we say thank you. Looking back, your comments and suggestions have helped mold the paper into what it is today. Looking forward, we ask for your help. We need you to let us know what stories are important to you—and we need you to tell us your stories too.

With your help, we will continue our efforts to cover the entire community. To that end, we’ve decided to change our maxim to “The Voice of Highbridge.”

Finally, to our readers, volunteer staff, funders, and those who have made donations, thank you for supporting the Highbridge Horizon.
